Joe Rosenthal of Associated Press for his photograph of the Marines planting the American flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima.
Joe Rosenthal captured a classic image of World War II when he snapped a photograph of five Marines and one navy corpsman raising the United States flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. His photo caused some controversy; as this flag was the second one raised, some thought he had staged the scene. He did not, he just captured it for posterity. Since the photograph was taken in February of 1945 and not in 1944 it was technically not eligible for the 1945 Pulitzer, but the rule was suspended “for this distinguished example”. The United States War Memorial in Washington DC is modeled on his photograph.
